Project overview
Volunteers will be working on several different kinds of tasks on this project, providing an opportunity for people with a broad range of fitness and skills: building a fence, moving rock and gravel, working with digging tools for regular trail maintenance, removing french broom. (see orange trails below for an idea of planned work areas.)We also need help with registration and in the kitchen, so there is a role for almost anyone!
Glen Canyon Park is a very natural area in both look and feel. We are going to keep the trails looking natural, while improving safety, drainage, and sustainability We will build two turnpikes to raise the trail and improve drainage in areas that are wet & boggy during the winter. We will replace two fences to protect sensitive areas. We will remove some steps that are in very bad shape, replacing them with a minor re-route to both enable access and protect the grassland. We will install steps in a couple of other areas where the trail is particularly steep and erosive, and repair the trail tread and stabilize the downhill edge of the trail along a stretch of trail on the eastern hillside.
Meals: V-O-Cal will provide breakfast, lunch and dinner on Saturday, and breakfast and lunch on Sunday. more...
What to Bring and Wear: Come prepared! Please review this information before you arrive!
Directions: Directions for parking, walking to site, etc.
Other: All registered volunteers will receive a really cool t-shirt.
If you or your friends plan to attend but have not formally registered, please remind them to do so - it helps us have the right amount of food.

San Francisco's Glen Canyon Park is a wonderful bit of wilderness in the heart of the city, but it is in need of some care and repair. June 28-29, in partnership with SF Recreation and Parks, roughly 175 V-O-Cal volunteers will maintain and repair the primary trail network, repair drainage, reroute a highly erosive of trail section, install a raised turnpike over two boggy areas of much-used trails and remove invasive French broom. |
A project fact sheet will be sent out to all registered volunteers. Please register online so that you will have all the information you need. If you are under 18, you will need to have a parental signature on your waiver to be allowed to participate.

Project and Parking Information
Parking in SF is an ongoing challenge and there is no parking directly associated with Glen Canyon Park. We strongly recommend taking public transportation! Either BART or MUNI (44) will get you to the Glen Park station, just a 15 minute walk to the registration area.
If you can’t take public transportation, there is on-street parking available along Bosworth, Elk, and Duncan Streets and we have arranged for a limited number of spots in the parking lot at the SF Police Academy, 350 Amber Drive.
"Camping" (Limited and Optional)
“Camping” for this project is going to be a different experience! A limited number of slots will be available both Friday and Saturday nights for volunteers to throw out a sleeping bag on the floor or balcony at the day camp building- a unique urban camping experience. If you plan to stay overnight, please email Kevin, kevin@v-o-cal.org, for more information. For those not spending the night, we will have an area at the registration/kitchen area for you to leave your eating utensils and a change of clothes. Please bring them in a labeled bag!
Volunteering Options: We encourage you to come for the weekend, although you can volunteer for one day if you can't make the entire weekend.
Food and Drinks: Breakfast, lunch, snacks and dinner will be provided on Saturday, breakfast and lunch on Sunday. Volunteers will assemble their own lunch on-site. There will be a hot dinner on Saturday night and a hot breakfast on Sunday morning. Vegetarian options are provided for all meals. Cold beverages (including some beer for those 21 and over) are provided at the end of the work day on Saturday. Please bring your own eating utensils. We follow “Leave no trace” camping guidelines, bring a plate, a cup and eating utensils for your own use.
If you or your friends plan to attend but have not formally registered, please remind them to do so - it helps us have the right amount of food on hand.
