Each of the projects we select for the 2007 season will have the following characteristics:
a primary V-O-Cal goal is to provide a high quality volunteer experience, and that means fun projects in beautiful places.
2006-2007 is a launch year for V-O-Cal, so the projects have to be important, attractive resource protection related opening.
Trail design and permitting complete. V-O-Cal will work with the agency to create detailed construction notes, but the broad design must be complete.
150-200 volunteers should be required for the completion of the baseline project. The total project should be defined as 130-140% of minimum expected completion, so effective work crews have additional sections to move to upon completion of their higher priority sections.
close to immediate Bay Area with ready accessibility to the site, not more than an hour's drive from a large population center.
intermediate. Installing water bars, rock steps, and building rock walls are all ok for an intermediate project, depending on how much of the total project they represent. The staging area should be no more than a one mile hike from the first work section.
trail work - either construction or maintenance or both, planting, limited mechanized tool usage requirements (short wooden walkways, for example) habitat restoration
good reputation for strong volunteer program, good volunteer base, either directly or with Friends of... group.
Collectively, our projects will demonstrate V-O-Cal's breadth and range considering location and terrain. We aim to work with diverse populations and agency partners of different types, i.e., national, state, local/regional.
