2008 Project Season

Volunteers for Outdoor California has finished it's 2008 project season. Thank you to all the volunteers, supporters, parks agencies and sponsors for making the season a great success. We finished the year with seven completed projects, along with our first corporate guided volunteer event. Over 600 volunteer trail workers, kitchen and camp helpers, and crew leaders contributed to more than 14 miles of trail being built or modified by Volunteers for Outdoor California in 2008.

Earth Day Extravaganza

Well over 200 volunteers came to San Jose's Alum Rock Park for V-O-Cal's first trail work weekend of the year April 18-20. The volunteers refurbished the entire length of the South Rim Trail, which had not been worked on in years and spruced up parts of the Switchback Trail as well.

Calistoga/ Napa Valley Weekend

Oat Hill Mine Trail Users The Oat Hill Mine Trail Project in Calistoga was amazing - and HOT! Held during the record heat wave in mid-May, 148 hardy volunteers hiked and worked in 100ยบ heat. With a minimum each-way, tool-carrying hike of 2.7 miles on Saturday, the OHMT volunteers definitely earned the smoked tri-tip and Ben & Jerry's served for dinner.

Oakland Adventures

This weekend project involved the installation of a network of trails in King Estates Open Space on National Trails Day weekend, June 7-8. This beautiful natural grassland park with terrific views is a gem in the middle of Oakland but had no trails.
As a special treat, volunteers were able to camp at the Oakland zoo, a rare opportunity.

SF Wilderness

On a beautiful weekend in the city, 147 volunteers joined forces to make a big difference in Glen Canyon Park, building 40 steps, adding fencing to protect sensitive plants, and constructing 2 sections of raised trail to keep walkers out of the mud in winter.

Brushy Peak Loop Trail Project

Who says you can't build trail in Livermore in September? 110 volunteers proved you can by building the Brushy Peak Loop Trail to open up access to the preserve. 90 degree temperatures, large boulders and compacted soil were just a few of the challenges of this project...a testament to the dedication and ability of volunteers. bploop

Sequoia Trail at Big Basin State Park

sequoiatrail Over 110 volunteers joined together in Big Basin State Park near Boulder Creek in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Volunteers rerouted several sections of trail, installed several rock causeways, and built a set of stairs on the Sequoia Trial, one of the oldest trails in the park.

The Owl Trail at Muir Beach Overlook

Camping at the Muir Beach Overlook and working from there to Slide Ranch, V-O-Cal volunteers restored over 3,000 of the Owl Trail, a much-used coastal hiking trail that was being lost to vegetation. In addition, aging creosote logs were replaced by a new fence bordering the Muir beach overlook parking lot. bploop
